4 Simple Ways to Track and Measure Your Organisational Resilience

As a leader you’re responsible for bringing clarity, strategy, organisation and a collaborative approach to the organisational workplace. These variables are difficult to measure, largely intangible, yet impact the success of any organisation. Sometimes as leaders it can be hard to know where to start with resilience. Take a hard look at the 4 key dimensions of resilience in your organisation and reflect on:

  1. People: The health and well-being of everyone living and working in the organisation.
  2. Organisation: The structural, economic and social systems that enable staff in organisations to work peacefully, and act collectively and collaboratively.
  3. Place: The quality of infrastructure, systems and processes in organisations that provide critical services, protect and connect staff while they carry out their roles within the organisational culture.
  4. Knowledge: The capacity to honestly learn from the past and take appropriate action based on (a) informed, (b) inclusive, (c) integrated, and (d) iterative, decision making, in teams and across the whole organisation.

This is by no means a simple exercise, it requires (1) deep reflection and critical thinking, which is more than reactive behaviour), (2) honestly accepting reality and more than only positive thinking and positive psychology), (3) sustainable planning with a reasonable and flexible longer term visionary goal in sight even if it’s not yet totally concrete, which is more than quick fix type actions.

These 4 dimensions were defined by the Rockefeller Foundation. They are important because your organisation can use them as a framework to make resilience more visible. With this as your foundation, you can start to define appropriate business indicators to enable you to track and measure how resilient is your business and your leaders.
